Using Kris Loya's Patterns in an Interior
Last week I featured an interview with Surface Pattern Designer Kris Loya on the blog. We talked about her work as a watercolor artist and how she finds mediation in her creative process. Your response to her work was amazing, thank you!
Today I wanted to take things a step further by showing you how one of Kris' patterns could be used in an interior. To help me do this (since I am definitely not an interior decorator) is my friend and colleague Jen Pollard from Park Place Designs. I'm sure you will enjoy Jen's ideas as much as I do.
Pattern as Wallpaper
I would love to see Kris’ South Breeze pattern in a wallpaper.
The trick to working with this pattern is to address the yin and yang of masculine and feminine. Hard and soft. Keep them as equals and you’ll have a happy room for everyone.
The feminine aspects start with the floral wallpaper. It’s a big statement. And a soft one. Add a large piece of furniture such as the sofa pictured here in a solid color with straight lines. Choose one with a mid-century or modern influence.
To that add the softness of pillows. A small geographic print with a touch of green ties back to the wallpaper. A fuzzy grey pillow is perfect for curling up with. Bonus points for its organic texture and grounding color. The pink pillow here is a straight-forward, strong addition. No frills needed.
All of the pillows are different textures (as are the sofa and rug) for visual interest. It makes you want to reach out and touch everything in the room! The finishing touch is art for the walls. Again, I chose graphic black and white silhouettes with curvy edges to contrast with the floral wallpaper.
Meet Jen from Park Place Designs
Hi, I’m Jen. I’m a mama of two young boys and I refuse to settle for fugly rooms to accommodate us. I believe in beautiful, stylish and comfortable rooms that reflect the personality and history of the ones who use them. You!
I’ve also got over 14 years and education in the early childhood field, so I know my stuff when it comes to tinies. I can tell you how and why you can make your rooms the best they can be. Isn’t that something we all deserve?
The best part? My jam is virtual interior design. Meaning we work together when it works for you and I give YOU the tools to put together your room. Easy as that.
